Fly fishing Ullswater is available from boat or bank. This beautiful Lake District water supports a healthy population of feisty brown trout. The average size is approximately 10 – 14 inches (26-36cm), but their are larger specimens in this water.
I have fished Ullswater for over thirty years and know the lake intimately. We can venture out on Ullswater in my own boat – a very stable fourteen footer. Alternatively, a larger eighteen foot boat can be arranged if you are with a friend or partner, .
Lunchtime can be spent amidst beautiful surroundings in one of the many bays on Ullswater.
Mid-March to the end of June is normally the peak fishing period on Ullswater. A light ripple and cloudy skies are the perfect combination for a good day’s fishing. If the conditions are not suitable on the arranged day, there are plenty of rivers in the area, so the day need not be wasted.
Mayflies normally start to hatch in earnest by mid-May and the trout are soon on them. Suitable mayfly imitations can offer some great sport during this period.
Daytime sport during the warmer months of July and August can be slow. Given the correct conditions, Ullswater normally comes good again in September and the lake can offer sport to the end of the season on September 30th.
